Hi Linda - good to hear from you about your first impressions of Wismar. Have you seen the St Nikolai Cathedral? It is supposed to be one of the biggest in Europe, so I imagine you have. What is the time difference between Germany and Scotland? Have they changed to summer time yet? And do they use poly bags or recycled paper ones? Good luck with the German lessons. Ada

As some of my very distant ancestors lived around the Scandanavian and Baltic lands, it will be interesting to learn of a leading centre of the Wendish section of the Hanseatic League.

We have seen the outside of St Nikolai, and it is indeed very big (the 4th tallest in Germany) there are more than 6 million bricks in the construction all of which were made locally in the town! I also visited St Georgiens Church. This is Wismar's newest church, built in around the 1500s! It remained unfinished for a long time and since 1990, after a major storm, the church is finally receiving restoration. I had a wee sneaky peek yesterday and I’m sure Cardonald would fit inside it many times! I will hopefully get some photos soon for you all to see.
There is not much of a time difference, we are only 1 hour ahead and I think summertime begins next week but Ill need to check that out!
Most people here have bikes and so just put all their messages in their baskets, but mostly its cotton bags or you have to buy plastic ones for 10 cents. Recycling is very prominent here and each block of flats has its own recycling centre for plastic, glass and paper.

Happy Easter, Linda! Do they have chocolate Easter eggs, or some other symbol like the fish I think you get in France?

Thanks very much for the information about the rich history of Wismar, Linda! And the photos help us to imagine the place.
Although I know that "w" is normally pronounced as "v" in German, I have been told that, in parts of the north, it is pronounced as a "w". I am wondering if "Wismar" is pronounced "Vismar" or "Wismar"?

Pronounciation varies greatly over Germany, in the north it tends to be more soft and in the south quite strong and harsh.
However we tend to call it "Veesmar" but all the locals say "Vismar" and some drop the "r" altogether.

Hi Linda
Its been good reading about your surroundings and what you are doing at university. It sounds a lovely place and prompts memories for me when I worked in Berlin in my 20's. Glad the weather is similar to home - keeps you from being too homesick! In SS and BC We are getting ready for the trip and promotion service in about 4 weeks or so. We are all missing you and are looking forward seeing you when you come back. Keep strong and safe. Love and hugs.

Hey Linda nice to hear how you are getting on and the parts of Germany you are discovering! Had a great evening at the Elderslie Kirk Players on Friday - thought your artwork was superb! Today was the Sunday School and Bible Class Promotion Service and JAM were singing too! Can't believe you are more than half way through your stay in Germany. Look forward to seeing you back at church.
